apparently i have an actual literal anxiety disorder
that is so weird to me
i’ve never been a particularly anxious/stressed person
i’ve never had issues with body image or depression
this is hard for me to understand
i deleted that post because having that picture on my blog was making me too sad about how people are dumb
why the fuck they were ASKING him about abortion in the first place is beyond me. the guy has a new movie out (this is right after the Never Say Never premiere), he’s a pop star, he’s adorable… there are so many more appropriate questions. As a journalist, it sickens me that so many people just go for the questions that are going to stir controversy. no matter how Bieber answered that question, it would have been a media hailstorm, and Rolling Stone would be there to reap the benefits.
ughghghgh I’m so mad this happened so long ago why is this post going around again

I wish to encourage you never to apologize for being inquisitive again. Yesterday in class, as you weredescribing some research you had done into Islam, you said you did your research because you were a “nerd”. That is incorrect. You did your researchbecause you were inquisitive. Don’t ever pretend to be less intelligent than you are. :)
Friendly advice - take it or leave it.
life advice from the campus minister, from whom i am taking a class.

*: The economy in the Avatar universe is apparently fascinating to me.
I wonder if Amon has thought about the greater economic implications of what he’s planning do. We’ve seen that plenty of businesses and public services utilize bending, and plenty of people are employed expressly to use their bending in some way - the mail system in Ba Sing…
Urk! I’m definitely not meaning to imply that the equalists don’t have tons of really good points, or that the world shouldn’t change to adapt to a more equal culture. They absolutely do. But the entire world’s economy is deeply involved with bending - even non-benders seem to be employed largely by companies that operate on bending, or use bending in some capacity. So putting them out of business is bad news for non-benders who work alongside benders.Manual labour in the Avatar universe always struck me as an earthbender thing, but that’s why I’m so eager to know more about how the avatar universe works! Even that is problematic, because it means you’re less likely to get work in manual labour fields if you can’t earthbend. One could argue that the Avatar world lacks certain technological advancements that they might have simply BECAUSE they rely on bending. In that way, getting rid of bending entirely might be MORE beneficial to society than keeping it!
It IS really interesting. I love how grey everything is. The equalists are totally right on many points, and even taking away bending entirely has the potential to create problems for non-benders because the world is just so connected! I’m so curious how they’re going to explore and resolve these issues.
Well, my point isn’t that the non-Benders would actually do manual labor, but it would be similar to our current form of society. I’m also curious what the bottom-feeder jobs in the society would be, because I’m sure earth benders would be better suited for jobs like that, and it wouldn’t really be an issue of manual labor. But also, maybe McDonalds-type employees? That’s what the non-benders are stuck doing?
The economy of the Avatar world is just like ours: built on a system of inequality, where most people aren’t privileged but buy into the idea of the possibility of upward mobility, where they believe benders “deserve” their higher status in society.
I mean, the fact that it’s possible for the Equalists to take away bending… that’s like the power to turn white people into black people. You lose that status in society. It’s not like any Benders really did anything to deserve their powers. But it reminds me of Dr. Seuss’s star-bellied sneeches stories; they would still find a way to separate and segregate and say “these people are inherently better because ____.”
It’s like the Harry Potter world, with purebloods and half-bloods and Muggle borns. Just a means of separating people based on something that doesn’t matter.
Benders have been exploiting their powers and exerting them over non-Benders, but there are Benders, like Mako and Bolin, who are equally exploited by the powerful Benders who run the mafia and the government.
Man am I really writing all this about a cartoon jeez I love discussions like this
I wonder if Amon has thought about the greater economic implications of what he’s planning do. We’ve seen that plenty of businesses and public services utilize bending, and plenty of people are employed expressly to use their bending in some way - the mail system in Ba Sing Se in the original show, whatever Mako was doing with the lightning, etc. Taking bending away means that entire industries will be crippled virtually overnight, tons of people who might not have other job skills will be out of work, and the economy will take a major hit.
Everything that used bending will be forced to adapt their business models and production practices in potentially expensive and time-consuming ways. Some things might not even have a non-bending alternative!
Then again, taking way bending might just propel the development of technology out of pure necessity into an age of invention, simply because society will be forced to invent ways to make up for the sudden lack of a resource that was once thought infinite. It’s like how things like, say, war necessitates huge technological advances.
If Amon wasn’t so busy being the Phantom of the Opera I would be really interested to hear just what the heck his plan is for avoiding a great depression.
Yeah, well that was one of the arguments for slavery and creating our system of inequality. “This labor system WORKS! If it’s not broke, don’t fix it!” But the problem is the system IS broken, because people are being disadvantaged, and it’s so much easier to succeed and find work if you can bend. Mako and Bolin have a hard enough time finding work, and the only work Mako can find is where he can use his bending. Imagine life as a non-bender. Where do you find work? What is available to you?
You probably get stuck with the shittiest jobs that no one wants to do anyway - just like many Mexican and Latin American immigrants are trapped picking fruit and manual labor for far below minimum wage.
Gah Legend of Korra you are so interesting
I love the complexity of the Legend of Korra.
It’s from the perspective of the privileged, of those with bending, and they aren’t doing anything to discredit the fact that Benders are better off in society. I’m excited to see how the series will progress.
UNPACK THE KNAPSACK! Go go Equalists.
While discussing how to fit an entire production team in an 8.5”x11” photo.
Client: Can’t everyone stand in the front for a while?
Me: Excuse me?
Client: Yeah, I saw that photo effect in a Harry Potter movie once. Isn’t that photoshop?
Me: No. That’s magic.
